Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to frequently asked questions about telehealth and online therapy. Learn about services, how we help, and what you can expect from 1st Degree of Change Therapy.

Where are you located?

I am physically in Arizona however practice via online therapy and telehealth in three states - Arizona, Florida, Massachusetts and Indiana.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works almost exactly the same as therapy in an office. We meet each other face to face, although officially through a HIPAA compliant video software, and will talk like you normally would in an office. We will still work on skill building as well as processing current and past issues.

The main differences between in person and online are that you don’t have to drive to my office, which allows you access to a therapist who you may find as a better fit for you. The other main difference is that you are 100% in charge of your space. So make sure your door is locked, go out to your car, or tell your roommate that they should go get some ice cream so that you can feel secure in your therapy.

Do you offer in-person sessions?

Nope!

I used to do in-person therapy but for people with anxiety, trauma, and ADHD it seems that the idea of getting into a car and going to an unfamiliar space is too much. So why bother when you can do online therapy sitting on your couch!

What are your therapy session fees?

While I do take a few insurances my private pay fees are as follows:

55 minute session $225

85 minute session $335

* Superbills can be provided to you so  you can request your insurance to reimburse you.

What can I expect during my first therapy appointment?

Your first session or two will feel a bit different. The first session is where you get to basically word vomit everything you’ve been holding back or worried about. We’ll work on an assessment to look at all aspects of your life to determine what is going on for you.

Then we’ll create a Treatment Plan, or what I like to call the road map for your journey. We’ll set long-term goals for what you want to get out of therapy, as well as short-term goals to mark your progress and accomplishments in therapy.

How long will I need to be in therapy?

Well, that all depends upon you. I recommend we meet weekly in the beginning and then taper off as you get closer to graduating therapy.

However, my crystal ball got lost in the mail so unfortunately I can’t tell you exactly how long you will need to be in therapy. I will tell you that my goal is to work myself out of a job.

So we’ll move at your pace always looking towards you leaving and going out on your own.

Is everything I say in therapy confidential?

Therapists are bound by confidentiality agreements to keep all discussions private. Exceptions to this rule include potential harm to oneself or others, child abuse, or elder abuse, which therapists may legally be required to report to authorities.

How do I know if I need therapy?

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, experiencing persistent sadness, anxiety, or stress, or facing difficult life transitions and relationships issues that you find hard to cope with, therapy might be beneficial. Also, if you find it challenging to accomplish everyday tasks or your mental state is affecting your performance at work or school, it might be time to consider therapy.

What’s the difference between talking to a therapist and talking to a friend?

While friends can provide great support, therapists offer a professional, unbiased perspective and are trained to understand complex human behaviors and mental health conditions. Therapists also provide confidentiality and are skilled in therapeutic techniques designed to help you develop new ways of thinking, behaving, and feeling.

How do I choose the right therapist?
